PRP Microneedling
Guide
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an extract of your own blood that contains three to five times more platelets, growth factors, and active proteins for tissue and injury healing. It has been used in medicine for many years to accelerate wound healing, repair tendon, ligament, and joint damage, and help regrow muscle and bone. When PRP is used as a topical application with microneedling, it initiates a localized stem cell response.
Microneedling is a technique used to deliver micro-injuries to the skin using tiny needles delivered by a high-speed automated tip. It allows PRP to penetrate the skin. Over the weeks and months following treatment, this stem cell response recruits collagen-producing cells called fibroblasts. The fibroblasts replace tissue that has been damaged or lost through the aging process with healthy glowing skin that looks refreshed and rejuvenated.
What is a PRP Facial?
It is microneedling using your own PRP. PRP is platelet-rich plasma. PRP helps to heal tissue and grow new skin. It has several important growth factors necessary for wound healing and forming of new collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are the tissues responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. With PRP used as a serum, it enhances and speeds up healing and regeneration.
How is PRP isolated?
A small amount of blood will be drawn from you and placed in a sterile tube. It is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the different components of blood products. Red and white blood cells are divided into platelets and the plasma. This plasma now contains a higher-than-normal number of platelets and is called platelet-rich plasma or PRP. While the PRP is being prepared, your skin will be cleansed and prepared for the treatment.
What are the Benefits?
Potential benefits of PRP in cosmetic medicine and the anti-aging process include: reducing fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, rosacea, and total skin rejuvenation for tone and texture. Within a few weeks of treatment, improvement in overall tone and texture can be seen. New collagen and blood vessels begin to grow at 3-6 weeks, and a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles can be seen in the next 3-6 months.
While PRP can have some lasting effects, it can be combined with other skin care treatments to achieve your overall goals. It is best to combine PRP treatments with a good skin care regimen at home, and proper diet and lifestyle choices. The PRP facial is an exciting natural and innovative tool in anti-aging and cosmetic medicine. Harness your own healing power with your own blood.
Am I a Candidate?
It is safe for all skin types. Our practitioners will perform a thorough medical screening and evaluation to ensure that you are a candidate before the procedure. It addresses a variety of skin conditions including reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and sun damage, stretch marks and cellulite, and any areas on your skin in need of rejuvenation.
How Many Treatments Do I Need to See Results?
Depending on your skin care needs, a series of 4-6 treatments are recommended with microneedling at 4 week intervals.
With PRP facial treatments, a single session can be beneficial. We recommend a series of 2 microneedling treatments with hyaluronic acid serum 6 months apart. This will augment and enhance the PRP procedure for optimal skin health. Results will vary per individual and skin health. Most will see noticeable results at 3 months post-treatment but will continue to see subtle skin improvement in texture and tone and improvement in fine lines and wrinkles for up to 12-15 months. Skin is always aging and exposure to damaging factors contributes to your skin health. You may repeat treatments as often as once per year to continue to optimize results and skin rejuvenation.
What is the Downtime?
Most patients experience mild redness and facial flushing lasting 1-3 days. This will diminish over time. Patents may have some bruising, although this is very rare. Flaking is also common on days 4-7. Patients can resume a normal skincare routine within 24 hrs.
Can PRP Facials be Combined with Others?
Botox, fillers, chemical peels, and ablative skin rejuvenation can be continued as a regular skin care regimen. It is recommended that these procedures be avoided for 1 month.
