Fillers

April 23, 2022

Dermal fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment that can help to plump up and smooth out the appearance of the skin. They are most commonly used to treat wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging, but can also be used to add volume to areas like thin lips and hollow cheeks. Here at Simply.Aesthetics in Manasquan, NJ, we offer Juvederm, a popular type of treatment that addresses numerous aesthetic concerns and provides noticeable, lasting results.

Dermal Fillers

Also known as injectable implants, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers, this treatment is a cosmetic solution approved by the FDA for the purpose of restoring a youthful appearance to the skin. They are injected into the skin to “fill in” wrinkles, lines, and creases, as well as to add volume to lips, cheeks, and other areas of the face. They are made from a variety of materials, including human collagen, hyaluronic acid (HA), calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and autologous fat.

Juvederm, the most popular type of this treatment on the market, is made from hyaluronic acid. HA is a sugar molecule that is also found naturally in the body and helps to keep skin hydrated and plump. It has the ability to bind to water molecules, able to carry up to 1000 times its weight in water and bring it to the skin. As humans age, their production of HA naturally decreases, causing the skin to become coarse and less elastic, so this treatment replenishes the body with a brand new, synthetic version.

Where Can This Treatment Be Used?

This treatment can be used in a variety of areas on the face to create volume, lift, and sculpting. The most popular areas are the cheeks, lips, and under-eye areas where fine lines have appeared or the skin has sunk. They can also be used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose, such as marionette lines, which run from the corners of the mouth to the chin, or nasolabial folds, which run from the nostrils down to the corners of the mouth.

What Is the Treatment Process Like?

Before

Patients are first required to come in for an initial consultation with the provider to discuss their desired results. The staff will ensure that Juvederm can aptly address their concerns, and if not, will suggest an alternative treatment. For example, patients with wrinkles that become more pronounced as they move their face may be more suited to Botox, which relaxes the muscles under the skin to stop wrinkles from forming rather than giving the skin new volume.

Treatment Tailored to the Individual

Once the consultation is complete, the provider will draw up a unique treatment plan designed specifically for that patient. This includes details such as how many units of product will be used, where the injections will be made, and how many injections will be needed. Patients appreciate that a “blanket solution” isn’t used during this treatment, but rather specific results can be achieved by customizing the treatment to the individual.

On the Day

Patients must come in with a clean, makeup-free face on the day of treatment. The injection site is numbed with a local anesthetic cream or gel before injection. During the treatment, the provider will inject the treatment into specific areas of the face; the product is injected into the middle layer of skin (dermis) using a fine needle. The whole process usually takes less than an hour, and patients are free to leave immediately after.

Is There a Recovery Period Required?

Unlike cosmetic surgery, patients will not be required to take time off work or life following treatment, instead of being able to immediately carry on with their days. This makes treatment an ideal option for those who can’t afford to take a week off work to heal. While there may be a few lifestyle adjustments to make following treatment, these will be short-lived. Patients will be asked to avoid face massages, exposure to high temperatures, strenuous activity, and exposure to sunlight for the first 24 hours after treatment.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The results from Juvederm can last up to six months or longer. Juvederm and all similar products are temporary, providing results for generally up to a year after treatment. HA fillers last longer than other types of treatment. The exact amount of time will depend on which type of Juvederm you use, as their different products yield slightly different results. After this time, the body slowly breaks down and metabolizes the Juvederm molecules, causing the results to gradually fade. Touch-up treatments may be required to maintain the desired results.

What Will the Results Look Like?

Depending on what cosmetic concerns you wanted to address, you may be able to enjoy results such as the smoothing out of wrinkles and lines, the addition of volume to lips and cheeks, the plumping up of thinning lips, and the filling in of recessed scars. Many patients use this treatment to contour the jawline and nose to create a more sculpted appearance. Overall, the results help restore youth and softness to the face, while enhancing the patient’s existing beauty.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Treatment?

Those who are over 18 and want to improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, or other signs of aging are good candidates for this treatment. People who have lost volume in their face due to weight loss, or have always struggled with less volume in areas like their lips, may also be good candidates. Because these concerns are not always caused by aging, we invite any adult to come in for a consultation, even if they’re in their 20s. The same can be said for all genders and skin tones.

Some medical conditions and medications may render a person ineligible for treatment, as they can make the body inhospitable for Juvederm. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding will also be invited to come back at a later date. If patients are able to pause taking certain medications in the lead-up to treatment, such as staying off fish oil tablets, we may advise this. This is why it’s important we go over your medical history during your consultation.

Enjoy Younger-Looking Skin

Dermal fillers are an excellent way to achieve a more youthful appearance with minimal invasiveness. The results from Juvederm can be seen almost immediately, and the effects typically last for several months. For best results, it is recommended to schedule a consultation with a board-certified provider such as the team at Simply.Aesthetics in Manasquan, NJ.
