Botox and Dysport

April 28, 2022

Dynamic wrinkles, AKA the wrinkles that are caused by overactive facial movements, are one of the most common aesthetic concerns in the USA, with over 4.4 million Americans seeking a minimally-invasive treatment in 2020. These treatments, such as Botox and Dysport, work by targeting the muscles underneath the skin rather than the skin itself, which keeps the skin on top smooth and uncreased. Both treatments are offered here at Simply.Aesthetics in Manasquan, NJ.

The Difference Between Botox and Dysport

Botox and Dysport are both types of botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxin that comes from a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. This toxin blocks nerve signals in your brain that tell your facial muscles to contract – when it’s injected directly into the problem area, this action temporarily paralyzes those muscles and smooths out your skin’s surface. The result from both treatments is younger-looking, soft skin. While they are very similar, there are some important differences between them that one should be aware of.

The primary difference between the two is in the way that they are administered. Botox is injected directly into the facial muscles, while Dysport is injected into the skin itself, just beneath the surface of your skin. Because Dysport is absorbed more quickly than Botox, it typically takes less time to see results from the former than the latter. Additionally, Dysport can spread to a wider treatment area, making it particularly effective when treating larger areas of concern such as the forehead.

Where Can These Treatments Be Used?

As mentioned above, Dysport is commonly used to treat cosmetic concerns around the eyebrows and forehead. Botox, meanwhile, can treat all of these concerns, but can also be used to treat a wide variety of other cosmetic issues around the face. This includes crow’s feet, frown lines between the eyebrows, and lines around your mouth. It can even be used to help reduce the appearance of an uneven smile that is caused by muscle twitches or spasms.

What Happens During Treatment?

Before

Ahead of your actual treatment, we’ll ask that you come in for an initial consultation. This will be your chance to talk your practitioner through your cosmetic goals, and they will be able to ensure that botulinum toxin will be the right product to correctly address your needs. Importantly, they’ll determine which kind will work best for you. They’ll also look over your medical history, plus any medication you might be on, to ensure you’re a healthy candidate. If everything looks good, they will draw you up a treatment plan.

Your Appointment

No matter which treatment you get, injections typically take about 10-20 minutes to administer. Treatment will begin with gently cleaning your face to ensure no foreign substances contaminate the needle, and then applying a topical numbing cream to the treatment areas. We want to make sure your experience is as comfortable as possible. Your practitioner will make the injections, carefully following along with your treatment plan; this details things like how many injections are needed and how many units of product to use.

After the injections have been administered, your doctor will massage the treated areas of your skin to help distribute the product more evenly. You’ll be free to leave after that, and since we don’t use anesthetic during treatment, you’re allowed to drive yourself to and from your appointment. The effects of treatment typically begin to take hold within a few days, so you may notice a very fast improvement in the appearance of your skin.

Is There a Recovery Period Needed Afterward?

Regardless of which treatment you’ve undergone, you will not require a recovery period afterward since they’re both minimally invasive. Patients are immediately able to carry on with their normal lives, returning to work or errand-running. It is important, however, to avoid rubbing or touching the treated areas in the days after your appointment, as this can cause bruising or swelling. Strenuous physical activity could increase these symptoms. You should also avoid getting massages or facials during this recovery period.

How Long Do the Results Last and What Will They Look Like?

Results typically last for 3-4 months, depending on the treatment you’ve received. During this time you can enjoy smoother-looking skin that rejuvenates the face whilst keeping you looking natural – these treatments work to enhance your existing beauty rather than restructuring your face entirely. After a few months, you will notice the results begin to fade. Many of our patients choose to come in for touch-up injections to maintain their desired look, even updating their treatment plans to target new concerns.

Who Is a Good Candidate for These Treatments?

Many different factors can influence whether a person is a good candidate for either of these injections. Some of the most important considerations include the person’s medical history, current health status, and aesthetic goals. In general, individuals who are in good overall physical health are typically considered to be good candidates for treatment. This means people who do not have any serious medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or a history of bleeding disorders.

In addition to having good overall physical health, individuals should have realistic expectations about the results of treatments. This means that they should understand that even though both treatments can significantly improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face, they will not completely eliminate these signs of aging. It is also important that they are willing to follow proper post-treatment care instructions to avoid complications and achieve optimal results from their injections.

Fewer Wrinkles and Softer, Younger-Looking Skin

Whether you choose Dysport or Botox to treat your dynamic wrinkles, you can enjoy smoother skin for months on end, and all in just a few straightforward injections. Patients appreciate that both treatments only take a few minutes and require no recovery period afterward, plus they can be enjoyed by all genders and skin tones. Our team at Simply.Aesthetics in Manasquan, NJ is always thrilled to help new patients achieve their cosmetic goals.
