Targeted Sports Therapy for Stress Injuries

Stress injuries, also called overuse injuries, occur when an athlete places too much stress on a given part of the body. In a type called repetitive stress injuries, the athlete has injured themselves by repeating the same movement over and over.

There are over 100 types of injuries and illnesses caused by wear and tear on the body by putting too much stress on it. Stress injuries can cause outright tissues damage, inflammation or strains. Fortunately, our team at Simply.Aesthetics can use targeted sports therapy to help relieve your symptoms.

    What is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy is a type of rehabilitation used to treat stress injuries or sports-related injuries. It also helps the patient get back in shape for their chosen sport and reduce the risk of re-injury. During the early stages of their rehab, the patient works with our therapist to heal the injured joint or muscle. The patient will probably be told to rest at the start of the healing period. They may also be given ice packs or medication to control any pain or inflammation. Later, the therapist will work with the patient to strengthen the injured muscle or joint to prevent re-injury.

A successful application of sports therapy can obviate the need for surgery. The patient uses strength training and stretching to make the muscles around an injury stronger. The body heals the injury naturally, so the patient recovers more quickly than they would have if they had undergone surgery. Targeted sports therapy is a type of personalized treatment tailored for a specific patient.

    What Does the Treatment Involve?

In addition to the aforementioned stretches and strength training, sports therapy may also include massages, ultrasound, and trigger point therapy. The patient may also perform exercises to improve their coordination and balance.

If the patient is seeing our therapist for the first time, they will have to provide a detailed medical history explaining how they hurt themselves, the type of injury they have and how bad the pain is. They should also describe situations that make the pain worse. For example, does it hurt more if they raise their arms over their head? The patient should also describe any medications they have taken and any other treatments they have tried.

The therapist will examine the patient. They may also order certain tests to both determine the severity of the injury and to make certain there are no other problems.
